A hosepipe ban is now in force across Sussex but when can you still use one?
While the ban is in force from today (Friday 12 August), rule breakers of domestic rules could face a hefty £1000 fine.
Can a hosepipe still be used?
Generally, no - you can't use a hosepipe connected to a mains supply to water your garden or lawn.
There are a few exceptions though. If your lawn has been laid in the last 28 days, then you can still use a hosepipe to water it. The same rules that apply to gardens, are also in force at allotments.
If you have a pond with fish, you can still use a hosepipe if unavoidable for the welfare of the fish.
Regarding vehicles, again - you can't wash these if using a hosepipe connected to a mains supply, including use of a jet washer at home. Taxis and private hire vehicles can still be cleaned with a hosepipe as this is a commercial vehicle.
Washing pets or livestock is still allowed, with a reminder to use the water sparingly.
You can also still use a hosepipe to clean a wheelie bin.
