In the weekend’s local football, there was disappointment for both the area’s senior local teams
AFC Uckfield Town went down to a two-nil defeat at Saltdean. And Crowborough Athletic, who finished their match with ten men, were beaten by a late goal in a one-nil defeat at home to AFC Varndeanians.
Also in the Southern Combination League, there was a big win for Jarvis Brook, who beat Capel seven-nil in the Division Two Cup.
In the Mid Sussex League, Rotherfield lost two-one at Holland Sports. Fletching were two-nil winners over Nutley. Newick lost six-three at Eastbourne Rangers Reserves, while Uckfield United were beaten three-one by Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Elsewhere, Hartfield beat Ardingly Reserves six-nil, and Plumpton won two-nil against Portslade Reserves. But there were defeats for Barcombe, Maresfield and Buxted.
There was a dramatic finish to Lewes’s FA Trophy clash at Chesham. The home side equalised deep into stoppage time to level the match at two-all, before Lewes came out on top in a penalty shootout.
After Brighton and Hove Albion’s men’s team enjoyed a memorable victory over Chelsea on Saturday, it was a day to forget for Brighton’s ladies team yesterday, as they crashed to an eight-nil defeat by Tottenham. Meanwhile, Lewes’s ladies team won by the only goal at Coventry United.
In local rugby, there was the narrowest of defeats for Uckfield, losing 14 points to 13 to Shoreham. There was defeat too for Crowborough, who were beaten by Beccehamian by 34 points to 26.
Finally, for local horse racing fans, there’s a meeting this afternoon at Plumpton Racecourse – the first race is due off at 12.45.
