The charity, Victim Support, has launched a specialist service for victims of relationship fraud in Sussex, with a team of dedicated fraud caseworkers providing free, confidential and personalised support to local people affected.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the charity says that many could be more vulnerable to devastating romance scams, as they search for love or companionship online.
Victim Support is an independent charity, dedicated to helping people affected by crime and traumatic incidents in England and Wales.
The newly established service is delivered in person and online and includes one-to-one support sessions, peer support and group work.
Relationship fraud happens when someone is deceived into thinking they are in a genuine friendship or romantic relationship with someone who is actually a criminal.
These frauds often take place online, with the scammer coercing the victim into sending money or holding or transferring funds to another account.
One victim, supported by the service, who lost £140,000 - his entire life savings - in a complex romance scam described how talking to other victims helped him recover.
“There are about six of us in the group, we meet online, and it’s been good and very helpful to chat with people who understand because they’ve all been through similar experiences.
“And we’re not just talking about what happened to us, but it can be about the banks and the after-effects and the trauma of what we’ve endured. That can be difficult and challenging but I think it has to be done.”
He added that his caseworker, “works very hard and is so kind and really cares about those such as me whose lives have been turned upside down by these awful people. I can’t praise her and her team enough.
“I feel ashamed, embarrassed and physically ill after what I’ve done. I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through this. It’s broken our family, and the effects are clearly devastating.”
Lauren Brain, Relationship Fraud Service Manager, said:
“Relationship fraud is a devastating crime and it’s also remarkably common. We’re thrilled to offer specialist, tailored support to thousands of victims in London, Kent and Sussex – and with Valentine’s Day approaching, we want everyone to know that if you have been affected, help is available.
“Sadly, there is so much shame and stigma around relationship fraud. Many victims are too embarrassed to open up to their friends or family about what has happened, leaving them isolated and vulnerable. That’s why this service is so important. Support is personalised, from providing a safe space to talk or setting up peer support with other victims, through to information and advice about how to get your money back. If you have been affected, don’t suffer in silence – contact our service for support.”
The service is available to anyone over 18 who has been affected by relationship fraud in London, Kent or Sussex.
People can contact the service directly by emailing FraudPeerSupportPilot@victimsupport.org.uk, calling 0303 313 2955 or via Victim Support’s website.
