Eastbourne Borough Council has temporarily closed the Holywell steps as of 2 February 2026
The decision was made as a precautionary measure after cracks appeared in the chalk behind the steps, posing a potential risk to the public.
Current safety measures and status:
- Geotechnical Assessment: Engineers will carry out a detailed assessment of the chalk's stability and perform necessary maintenance.
- Wider Area Closures: Access steps at nearby
Birling Gap were also closed recently following a significant cliff fall that stranded nine people and a dog.
- Official Advice: Visitors are urged to stay well away from cliff edges and bases along the South Downs coastline, as erosion can cause sudden, unpredictable collapses.
Updates on the reopening of the Holywell steps are expected in the coming days.
