Plan to spend £3m restoring Herstmonceux Castle

The beautiful and picturesque castle could undergo a restoration to help it become a top tourist attraction

The castle closed in 2023 after safety concerns, with all staff and students returning to Canada.

More than £3m is now earmarked to be spent on major renovations. The castle, on the outskirts of Hailsham, was first built in 1441 and was renovated in the 1920s.

It's reported that urgent repairs are required to fix cracking of the towers, decaying stone and brickwork, damp and defective windows and roofs. The aim is to complete the works by late 2025.

Details also emerged of plans for a new farm shop, accommodation, retreats, new membership options, longer opening hours and land renovation.
