New social housing in Wealden unveiled

The first 100 per cent affordable housing development in Heathfield is due to be completed soon.

Wealden District Council’s Housing Development Team worked in conjunction with local contractor Trinity Homes Ltd to build the homes at Cart Barn Place, and Baily Garner which designed the scheme.

The 15-home development is available for rent only and is made up of six one-bedroom flats, two two-bedroom flats, three two-bedroom houses and four three-bedroom houses with rent prices ranging from £149 per week for a one-bedroom flat to £225 per week for a three-bedroom house. Rents are set at around 80% of market rent.

The design retains the original barn link with the use of traditional local materials, high quality landscaping, a natural pond area, wildflower planting and a log pile to encourage wildlife.

The scheme is due to be completed once speed reduction works to surrounding areas and roads have been completed - the new speed limit will be decreased to 30mph from 40mph.

Councillor Rachel Millward, Alliance for Wealden (Green Party), and lead councillor for Housing & Benefits and deputy leader of the council, said, “I am pleased that the completion of this development will be able to help some residents on the council’s housing register.  As a council we are seeing more residents needing help with housing provision as rent payments increase and a rise in landlords selling their properties because of unaffordable running costs.”
