It's he;p to secure private rented housing

Funding is to be used from the Homelessness Prevention Grant to help people find housing in the private rented sector across Wealden.  

The number of households approaching Wealden District Council for support with a housing problem or threat of homelessness has increased steadily over the last five years. Access to the private rented sector has significantly decreased in recent years, rents have increased, and available housing is less affordable.

A report was presented to Wealden council’s Cabinet Committee giving an overview of homelessness in the district. Within the report an assessment of the Letsure scheme was carried out. The Letsure scheme, which is currently in place at the council, sees deposits and rents paid directly to the landlord by the council, the council standing as guarantor, or flexible incentives payments. It aims to help residents who are homeless or threatened with homelessness and unable to afford a deposit for a privately rented property.

The existing Letsure scheme has been enhanced to provide greater support for households in Wealden. Wealden council has set aside £50,000 from the Homelessness Prevention Grant to be used to meet additional costs.

Councillor Rachel Millward, Alliance for Wealden (Green Party), lead councillor for Housing & Benefits and leader of the council, said, “This funding will not only help to secure housing for residents but will also help Wealden District Council to tackle the increasing problem of homelessness.

“By offering deposits, guarantees and a start-up grant, the Letsure scheme gives residents greater access into the private rented sector, which is becoming increasingly difficult to find and afford. With more than 1,200 households in temporary accommodation across East Sussex, over half of which have children, it is vital we do everything we can to support our residents in finding long term, secure accommodation.”
