The profile of women’s football has grown enormously in recent times, as illustrated by the huge attendances at the current 2022 Euros, which includes the matches played at the Amex Stadium in Brighton.
Building on this momentum, there is an exciting new project close to home, as ladies football returns to Uckfield after an absence of 20 years!
A new ladies team has been formed under the management of Jon Wood, a highly experienced football coach for many years in the town, who has been responsible for the Uckfield Grasshoppers Under 10 girls team. As the seasons went by and the club’s girls section grew in line with the popularity of girls and ladies football, it became apparent that once the girls reached 16/17, there was no ladies football in the town.
In 2020 AFC Uckfield Town entered into discussions with Uckfield Grasshoppers about a partnership to bring young players through from youth football to senior football. Since then, there has been a successful transition of players into a Under 17s Men's team for the 2021/2022 season.
Consequently, it is a natural progression for the ladies team to follow this pathway, which is hoped will create a lasting legacy for ladies football in Uckfield.
The ladies team is made up of existing players (ex-Grasshoppers) and some new ladies who have joined the club, which has entered the Sussex County Women and Girls Football League for the 2022/2023 season.
The club are currently recruiting new players and running pre-season training sessions throughout the summer at Uckfield Freedom Leisure’s 3G pitch every Friday 7-8 pm. If anyone is interested in getting involved, regardless of experience, they will be very welcome.
