Ryan Millns went along to the opening night on Tuesday 7th October. Here's what he thought:-
Fawlty Towers first hit TV screens back in 1975, way before my time, but I like so many others, remember the timeless 12 episodes word for word.
The Play is pretty much a mash-up of 12 episodes rolled into 2 hours. A little like a "best of" format, but one that works exceptionally well.
All the classics plots are featured. From 'The Hotel Inspectors', ‘Communication Problems' and ‘The Germans' all put together with craftsmanship by the comic legend who created the series - John Cleese.
Fawlty Towers opens with a heated exchange between Basil and Sybil – the long suffering married couple who run the Torquay hotel. It's clear from the off that Basil (Danny Bayne) feels trapped in a marriage that has long since exhausted any affection and is in a job he clearly detests and has completely the wrong personality for.
The cast is led by Danny Bayne as the hilarious Basil Fawlty, with Mia Austen delivering a spot-on portrayal of Sybil, and Paul Nicholas delighting audiences at the age of 80, portraying the bumbling Major.
Hemi Yeroham takes on the much-loved role of Manuel, while Joanne Clifton shines as the ever-resourceful and efficient Polly, and Jemma Churchill also adds great comic flair as Mrs Richards (Whaaaat!)
The set, transports the audience straight into the Torquay hotel of Fawlty Towers, from the dining room where Basil wrestles with guests, to the reception desk where Sybil’s sharp wit and telephone conversations keep things rolling.
Sybil’s famous “I know!” is totally uncanny, evoking memories of Prunella Scales’ original delivery.
The show is comfortable, funny and full of wit. Audiences of all ages will certainly recognise the classic lines and plots from the show.
It was a beautifully crafted trip down memory lane and worthy of a 5/5
