Council supports campaign against gender-based violence

Eastbourne Borough Council is inviting residents to take part in local events to mark the global campaign, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

This year, the focus is on tackling digital violence against women and girls, one of the fastest-growing forms of abuse. The 16 Days run from Monday, November 25, (the UN International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women) to Tuesday, December 10 (Human Rights Day).

​The council is working with local community groups, charities, and Sussex Police to raise awareness of the devastating impact of violence against women and girls and highlight the vital support services available across the area.

​Councillor Teri Sayers-Cooper, Women and Girls Champion at Eastbourne Borough Council, said: "Tackling violence against women and girls is a top priority for us, and this year's focus on digital abuse is a critical part of that work.

"Violence is often hidden, but the statistics remind us that we cannot be silent: on average, a woman is killed every three days in the UK by a partner or ex-partner.

"Our events in Eastbourne are not just symbolic, they are a call to action. We urge all residents to stand with us, educate themselves, and become active allies in ending violence against women and girls in our community and online."

​A series of initiatives will take place in Eastbourne in the lead up to and during the 16 Days, including:

Saturday, November 22

• Memorial service and refreshments: Hosted by Mothers' Union at All Saints Church, Grange Road, starting at 9.30am.
• Silent walk: Meet at Victoria Place at 11.45am, walk begins at noon to Bankers Corner, concluding with a 3-minute silence.
• Awareness stall at The Beacon: From 10am to 4pm, various support groups will be available to speak with shoppers and victims to offer information, support and advice. 

Tuesday, November 25

• Vigil for victims and survivors: Meet outside the Town Hall clock at 5.30pm
• White Ribbon UK Day - a call for action for men to support women against violence and domestic abuse. Volunteers will be handing out information and white hearts at Eastbourne Railway Station from 9am.

Saturday, November 29

• Awareness stall at Langney Shopping Centre: From 10am to 3pm, various support groups will be available to speak with shoppers and victims to offer information, support and advice.

Wednesday, December 10

• Final event: Walk through the town centre, meeting at noon at Victoria Place. 

The campaign's signature colour is orange and people attending the events are encouraged to carry an orange flower to show their solidarity.
